July Desktop Calendar

This month, as we celebrate the 238th birthday of our nation, we should all reflect on this statement made by one of our Founding Fathers:

"My God! How little do my countrymen know what precious blessings they are in possession of, and which no other people on earth enjoy!"Thomas Jefferson

Remember how our nation came to be and at what cost and know that it can all be gone in a generation if we don't pass on its truths to our children and grandchildren.

May God Bless America

June Desktop Calendar

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, and I hate to be the one to tell you: 2014 is half over! Have you made half the progress on your UFO's that you thought you would? Well, I have! I learned early on to set very modest goals. Then, when you meet them (or even exceed them!) it's a pleasant surprise! And that's exactly what I did this year! I aimed for 4 personal quilts done and I'm halfway there! (No, Carla, I'm NOT lying!)
Ok, I'm almost there...but legally I have til the end of June, so if you're going to get technical, I may have jumped the gun on the bragging aspect...

I've had an awesome May, though, with lots of traveling. I drove up to Lubbock with Stephen to pack up Jill and bring her home from Texas Tech for the summer. Smart girl made the Dean's List again, so our homeschooling career has been officially vindicated!
Laura, Holly, Morgan and my JillyBean

Then, a week later, Jill and I flew to South Carolina to A) see Megan, Alex and the grandkiddos, and B) pick up my new Mini Cooper! This is how I spent my time on the flight:
Those are ultra-tiny 1/4" hexies that I'm English paper-piecing, and as you can see, they've already driven me to drink. The entire (mini)quilt will be the size of a piece of printer paper, and I'm hoping to have it done by the guild's 2016 quilt show. But since I only seem to work on it on the plane, I may have to schedule monthly trips to SC - in the interest of my art, of course!
While my girls spent one afternoon shopping, I got to babysit the kiddos. That's Jack, Sofie & Owen. Had all three of them happy and smiling at the same time.  Short-lived though. After the requisite four bedtime stories, as I was tucking Sofie into the bottom bunk in Jack's room (we were all going to camp out), Jack leaned over the top bunk to make sure I was doing it right, and thunk-thunk-thunk - scream!
Head met ceiling fan. Just like his uncle Merritt did about 16 years ago. To the day.
Then Jack wanted to sleep on the bottom and Sofie wouldn't sleep on the top, so she ran out crying, and when I took Jack down to find his Mr. Bump coldpack, I found Jill at her wits end with Owen, who wouldn't stop crying cuz Mommy wasn't there to put him to bed. All 3 hysterical at once. Haven't hit that trifecta since my own kids were little. My work here is finished.

The saving grace for me was my new car! Alex is the Sales Manager at Century Mini in Greenville, SC, and he ordered me my new 2014 Clubman. Got it all decked out for me, too. He's the best son-in-law ever!

 CabinQuilter!
Runs like a dream, handles like a sports car, and hits 90 with no effort whatsoever!
(Not that I have any actual personal knowledge of that.)
Which brings me to the point of this post: the June calendar! Unfortunately for you, it doesn't bring us to the point just yet. First, I have to tell you how I came up with this month's quilt calendar. A few weeks ago I took a workshop with Elsie Campbell who taught us the meaning of "precision piecing."

The little 24" project took me almost 4 weeks to finish. Well, not finished exactly, but it's all in one piece, anyway, waiting for 2 more borders to bring it up to about 32" sq. Anyway - I do like how it's turning out. And I won't mention anything about mis-cutting the mitered bordered sections six (6) times. Don't ask.
Really.
Don't ask.
Anyway - I brought the photo into EQ7/Stitch and played with some borders and while I was doing that, I thought, "Shoot - I'm halfway to a calendar! I can kill two birds with one stone!" So here's the calendar, as well as the soon-to-be-finished wallhanging. Assuming I can find a Jinny Beyer border print that'll work with it...

May Desktop Calendar

While working on this month's desktop calendar, I was rudely interrupted by another herd of wild hogs in the back yard. I don't mind if they stay in the woods, but for crying out loud, what's so great about St. Augustine grass, Cannas and weeds?! They've dug up about 400 sq ft of my backyard about 20' from the porch. So it's pitch black, and Stephen grabbed the .22, Merritt was on the shotgun, and I took my favorite - the snake charmer. We snuck out the front door, hoping to sneak up on them, when it occurred to me that we never did clean up the tons of crunchy dead leaves on the side of the house. Terrific alarm system for the hogs - they took off as we circled around back. I was hoping I'd at least have an exciting picture of tomorrow's BBQ to show you, but no luck. They'll be back...
The joys of living in the country!

Back to the calendar, 6 minutes early! And Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there - they deserve it! Except for those sows in my backyard - they deserve something else entirely!

April Desktop Calendar

Spring has sprung in Texas! On March 4th, we woke up to an ice storm, with branches and limbs bending and cracking under the weight.

Then, 10 days later, ol' man winter departed for good and left us with the first azaleas of spring! What gorgeous color!

This past weekend my friend Darleena was lucky enough to go in search of, and find, the first bluebonnets of the all-too-short season! Don't tell her I stole this picture off her FB page...but it's so picture perfect!
And with Easter coming in a couple of weeks, here's a desktop calendar to cheer you up if you're in the part of the country where spring doesn't show up til June.

March Desktop Calendar

I've been up to my eyeballs working out the last minute details of the guild's quilt show, Piece - Love - Sew this weekend, so once again, I'm going to barely squeak by under the midnight deadline. Fellow Show Chairs and Sew-Hos - Susi, Charmaine, and I have been working on it for two years, and it's lookin' pretty good, if I do say myself.
We've got some really talented quilters in our guild, and lots of brave Quilt Show Virgins, who took a deep breath and jumped in with their very first entries.
I'll give you a little peek into the show after I recover, but if you're in the Houston area, come on out today and see it for yourself!
At any rate - here's your March desktop calendar - not terribly spring-like, but in my defense, it was 74* yesterday but it'll be in the 30's on Sunday evening. When the weather makes up its mind, I'll move on into Spring!

February Desktop Calendar

Once again, I'm minutes away from midnight, still trying to figure out what to do for this month's calendar. I'm up to my eyeballs trying to finish my three quilts for our guild show. The deadline to turn them in is tomorrow, and though I entered four, I'll only actually be entering three. The largest one never made it to the longarm. It's hanging on my design wall waiting for its turn. Of course, the fact that it's been waiting since 2004 to be quilted, took the urgency out of that one, so it'll sit for another year (or two) til it makes it to the top of the rotation again. The calendar quilt is similar to one of my show entries that's waiting on its binding and label. I put it down so I could run over to the laptop and post this. I'm not going to show you a photo of the quilt til after the show. It's  a large wallhanging (unless it ends up as a baby quilt someday), and the other two entries are even smaller: one's a tablerunner and the other's a 32" entry in our guild challenge. More on those next month. For now, I need to get back to binding if I ever want to get any sleep before I turn these in tomorrow.

Happy New Year 2014!

2013 has been some year at our house! Lots of changes brought even more changes:

  • my oldest daughter and her family were transferred 843 miles away, to South Carolina, where they added a new grandbabyboy to the clan
  • my youngest daughter's at Texas Tech in Lubbock, a mere 508 miles away

With their moving, I've added a total of 10,138 miles to my odometer, just driving back and forth!
The ytd auto issues on these trips:
  • 1 blown tire
  • 1 giant oil leak
  • 1 dead battery
  • 1 way-dead alternator
It's a good thing I like driving!
This last trip to SC saw me ordering a new car from my favorite son-in-law, the sales manager at the Greenville, SC Mini Cooper dealership, Century BMW/Mini

Same as my current Mini, except it's in Ice Blue, kind of a pale confederate blue. And we're back to full warranty for all repairs, routine maintenance and tires. I should have it in a few weeks. They'll either deliver it to me here in Texas, or I just might fly out to SC and drive it back myself. Alone. In silence. It'll be like a vacation.

I know I came here for something...oh. I remember - the new calendar!
I hope you all have a terrific 2014!

December's Desktop Calendar

No sense waiting til the last minute, I always say. So it's 11:49pm November 30th, and I'm just now getting to my calendar. I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas! See you next year! (Scroll down to see the Quilt Market/Festival update below!)

November Desktop Calendar

I am absolutely exhausted from a week at International Quilt Market, followed by a quick late night run through Festival Preview Night with some of my SewHos. I drove almost 1000 miles, making airport runs and downtown treks, etc, - and I was never more than 35 miles from home! I think I can finally drive to and from the convention center blindfolded. Or asleep. I tried that once or twice this week. Shhhh...don't tell the Hos. I took lots of photos this year, but that'll be in the next post. Til then, here's your Thanksgiving desktop calendar. Enjoy!

October Desktop Calendar

Where has this year gone? I remember a couple of months ago I was thinking of pulling the Virginia Creeper vines off the side of the house, but it was too cold and dreary. January is always cold and dreary here in Houston, so I remember saying to myself on the way to the couch, "A nice venti white chocolate mocha would be perfect with an afternoon spent watching Remains of the Day. January's not the time to do outside work anyway. I'll wait another month or two til it warms up." So I did.

Then all of a sudden it's September 30th and those stupid vines are 10 months bigger, thicker and stronger and have grown super-suckers that redirect the tendrils to crawl in between the siding and end up inside my bathroom. Inside. Through a crack between the wall and the window. Not the part that opens. The part where caulk is supposed to go to keep stuff like this from happening.
For no reason in particular,  today's the day they absolutely, positively must come down. In 92* heat, 98% humidity and air so thick it makes me wheeze. Just me and the mosquitos. I worked on the vines, the mosquitos worked on me. I hate nature. That's why I live in the woods.  :big eye roll:

Even though I'm pretty much a pessimist, I think I know for sure that cooler weather will be coming soon. Well, maybe not soon, but at some point. Preferably in the next couple of weeks, and definitely before Christmas. But Halloween's on the calendar first, so here's a little pumpkin quilt for your desktop. Don't expect to see any frost on the pumpkin for quite a while though...

September Desktop Calendar

This is why I shouldn't have a Gin & Tonic break while I'm working on my calendar. Went to see what the boys were up to and stayed in The Cave to watch a scary movie followed by a documentary on the Ukranian Klitschko brothers - heavyweight boxing champs. Then I went to bed.
And yes, I follow boxing. Ever since my Grampa and I would watch the matches together curled up in his ratty red-fringed easy chair, while he smoked his cigar, smelling of Old Spice. When I was 5 or so. I've always loved boxing. I mean, have you seen Oscar de La Hoya?! He's not a heavyweight, but what's not to like??
...pause to take in his pretty boy looks...

Ok, enough. Back to business. Which was...oh yeah. Calendar.
I started fiddling with some dresden fan blocks and found one that reminds me of pencil tips with sharpener shavings. Look at it! Do you see it? That's ok - I do. So that'd be perfect for all the back-to-school pencil sharpening that's happening about now. Not at my house, of course, but by these kids up at Texas Tech. I hope.
Focus, Diane...the calendar! Ok, fine. Here it is.

August Desktop Calendar

Lots of exciting things have happened in the past month: the SewHos had our annual retreat,  my older daughter added another baby to the family, and my youngest became a Texas Tech Red Raider!  I'll address each of those in upcoming posts, but for now, as usual, the one with the deadline wins! So after you've gotten a little bit of August under your belt, come on back for the scoop on the aforementioned topics!

July Desktop Calendar

July.
In Texas.
Is HOT!
Like the sun-hot. Like hell-hot. Like "Don't walk outside barefoot unless you want to smell sizzling flesh-hot." At my house today it was 103* and last night the low was 83* THE LOW!! Everything's getting crispy no matter how much I water. And there's only so much you can take off before the neighbors start calling the police. I hate hot. Hot is evil. Hot should be banned. I hear they did that in Alaska. Maybe it's time to sell the house and move to a more temperate climate. Anyone know a real estate agent in Anchorage?
Have  a Happy Independence Day - God Bless America!

June Desktop Calendar

The year's half over and I apparently am trying to rush things. Instead of quilting during Friday night FreeSew at Quilters Crossing, I brought my laptop and worked on my calendar. I was actually going to have it ready before 11:59pm and I was so proud of myself!

My friend Sandy came over to take a look and said hesitantly, "Oh - It's patriotic. Wouldn't that be better for July?"
It is July!

Oh. Wait. It's not.

Dammit!!!
File it under July and start all over. Ugh.

So I thought, "How about a little summer picnic?" With watermelons and ants.
Worked on it for about an hour, and Sandy came over again, and said, "Um...roaches?"

What?! No! ANTS!
She said, "No, roaches."
Then of course, everyone had to come see. And they all saw roaches.
Come on! Really?!
Now really - does that look like a roach to you??

Back to the EQ drawing board. I gave my so-called "roaches" a butt-ectomy into a more rounded physique and was given the go-ahead to use my new and improved ants. So here's the June calendar...with ANTS! Although, since we are in south Texas, by rights they should be Fire Ants and colored red. But these are the happy black ants I used to play with in the cracks of the sidewalk when I was a little girl in Chicago. Those Yankee ants were nice.

May Desktop Calendar

Well, my older daughter, her husband, 2 kiddos and the new little one due in July are now residents of South Carolina. Sob. Helped to drive them and all (most) of their stuff, unpacked 42 boxes, and drove home, all in 4 days...I'm still tired!
Totally lost track of time and didn't realize today would be the first of May til about 9:30 last night. Ugh. The calendar! Still not in a cheery mood, but I tried not to take it out on my innocent calendar-lovers...flowers for Mother's Day, but kinda subdued and melancholy - much like I've been feeling these past couple of weeks. Time to get it together!

April Desktop Calendar

Yes, I know it's spring, but I'm just not in a spring-y mood. Sorry - no cute little bunnies cavorting in pretty spring flowers...maybe next month. Oldest daughter and family move to South Carolina in 10 days so I'm in kind of a blue (purple?) funk...
This quilt was submitted to the Electric Quilt's monthly EQ Club Challenge - see all the entries for the curved piecing challenge and be glad (as I am) that these are designs only and don't actually have to be pieced! It was designed in EQ7 and uses just 2 blocks: a full Double Wedding Ring, and a block made up of just 1 side of the pieced curve. Super-easy to design, kind of a pain to color correctly, and a definite piecing "no, thank you!"

March Desktop Calendar

I've got a hugely busy month ahead as Megan and her family get ready for their move to South Carolina. ::sniff:: Alex is taking a fabulous promotion with MINI and even though this is going to be a hard move for all involved, it'll be a good one for their family. ::sob:: And, speaking of moving...we kinda like their house better than ours, so we're considering buying it from them, and downsizing a tad. Go figure...
So, short and sweet - here's your desktop calendar!

February Desktop Calendar

February in Houston...we had an 80* day and a week later, we had a hard freeze. We throw on t-shirts and flip-flops one day, and scramble for sweaters and heavy sox the next. Last night I went to bed with the window open, and woke up at 2am to see my own breath! In the house!! I like to sleep in a meat locker, but jeez...this is ridiculous!
Ok - so I finished a quilt top I started in a class last year with Cynthia Regone and I liked it so much I thought I'd adapt the pattern for use as one of my desktop calendars. Here's the top - no snickering about the photo quality, please:
It's a kaleidoscope pattern made up of 2 different combinations of lights, mediums, and darks. And Cynthia made it so easy to put together, I just may make another one!

Happy New Year!

Is it me? Or do the years seem to go by faster than they used to? What I wouldn't give for a little slow-mo replay right about now.

December Desktop Calendar

The final desktop calendar of 2012 - where did the year go?? It's been fun doing all log cabin quilts this year, and no, I don't have a clue as to what the 2013 theme will be. Maybe no theme at all. We'll see what I can come up with at 11:45 on New Year's Eve.
To download it, click on the calendar to expand the image to full size, then right-click and choose Set as Wallpaper or Background. To really jazz up your desktop, right-click on your background and choose a color that coordinates with the calendar - or do like I do, and set your background color to black. It goes with everything and really makes the colors pop! And when your friends say, "Where did you get that?" Send them to see me!
